Vice President vows to support UMU saints as patron

UMU saints beat UCU

The Vice President His Excellency Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has promised full dedication to the activities of the University Football team (UMU Saints) as its Patron and pledged 10 million shillings to help them further their sports.

He made the pledge while receiving the trophy from the UMU Saints as the 2017 Champions of the Inter-University games in a Luncheon that was organized at Pope Paul VI Memorial Hotel Ndeeba.

The Vice President commended Uganda Martyrs University for promoting students’ talents saying this is an opportunity to enable them to compete favorably since sports is now one of the biggest employers of youths globally.

The Vice-Chancellor Rev. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri was grateful to the Vice President for agreeing to be the UMU Saints Patron adding that this is a great inspiration to the team.

“I don’t know any other sports team in this Country that has the Vice President as their Patron,” he noted.

He requested the Vice President through his connections to source for more support to the team and enable it to overcome some of its challenges.Prof. Maviiri emphasized the University commitment to continuously identify and develop student talents since this is another way of creating employment to its students.

The Sports Tutor, Kiggundu Tonny Ssali was grateful to management, staff, students and the surrounding community for the continuous support to UMU sports activities. He highlighted some of the challenges of the sports fraternity at UMU which include lack of a playground, stiff competition from well sponsored University teams, inadequate facilitation and equipment for the players.

The event was attended by Kampala Archdiocese Vicar, Msgr. Charles Kasibante who represented the Archbishop of Kampala His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the Secretary-General Uganda Episcopal Conference Msgr. John Baptist Kauta, Governing Council members, Management, Alumni, staff, students and friends of UMU.

A total of 14 million shillings was raised in pledges to support the UMU Saints sports activities.
