UMU 10th Annual Research Conference
The 2019 UMU Annual Research Conference took place on Wednesday 23rd January at the Nkozi campus. The theme of the day was: Higher Education and the Realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event began with opening remarks from the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John. C. Maviiri in which he also used the same opportunity to launch three books. That is, the Journal of Science and Sustainable Development, Volume 6 (Number 2); the UMU Research and Publications Newsletter 2017-2018; and Higher Education for African Challenges of the 21st Century. This was followed by a speech from, Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, the Assoc. Dean in charge of research and publications at UMU in which he gave an insight into the state of research and research support services at the institution.
The keynote address was given by the guest speaker, Dr. Fred Muhumuza, a development economist based at Makerere University, Kampala.
He highlighted the major roles that should be played by higher education institutions in realizing the SDGs. Prominent among these is that Universities can help in achieving the SDGs in a holistic way through their core activities of teaching, research and community engagement and in other innovative ways.
He also mentioned that there is a need to re-orient the education system at all levels to help people think and behave in ways that foster a sustainable planet. He concluded by urging Universities to provide knowledge on how high-level policy designs and programmes leave no one behind.
After the guest speaker’s presentation, there were many other presentations from both staff and students. The function ended with closing remarks from, Sr. Dr. Elizabeth Namazzi, the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research
This year’s conference was well attended with 331 registered participants.
