Bankosa Champions of UMU 2020 Cultural festival

Baganda Nkobazambogo Students Association (BANKOSA) has emerged Champions of this year’s Cultural festival competitions that have been running from Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th March 2020 at UMU Main campus Nkozi.
They won with 488 points while their counterparts Uganda Martyrs University Great North and Eastern Students Association (UMUGNESA) became second with 475 points. In third position were the Westerners of Uganda Martyrs University Association (WUMUA) with 466 points followed by Basoga Nseete with 456 points while the Congolese students (BANAMBOKA) took the fifth position with 419 points. The Uganda Martyrs University Burundi and Rwandese Students Association (UMUBURWA) did not join the competitions but were present to entertain the guests that turned up for the event.

This year’s Cultural festivities were organized under the theme; Culture as a cherished art in the modern world. The sub-theme was; The beauty of Culture to a youth of today.
Some of the items that were competed for included among others; herbs and food exhibitions, presentations of a set piece (University Anthem), evolution of the traditional wear, folk songs and dances; while the Cultural King and Queen title was won by UMUGNESA.

The Vice Chancellor Rev. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri reminded the staff and students in attendance that Management will continue to support cultural events because they do not contradict with Christianity. He was happy that the youths of today have shown a lot of interest in promoting their culture which is a good sign of development.

“Most active in the promotion of culture today are the youth which is a good gesture because anyone who is detached from their culture is lost with no identity”, he said.

He encouraged students to always be active and engage in such activities which enable them arouse their God given talents which take them long to identify.

The Dean of Students Mrs. Roselyne Ssali was proud of UMU students who always come out to exhibit their culture with love and pride. She expressed need to take this activity to a higher level and interest other companies or individuals to join and show support to our students.

The Secretary for Community and Culture Affairs, Timothy Chelimo who was the organizer of this event expressed gratitude to the University Management for continuously facilitating cultural activities which has enabled students to embrace and cherish their cultures through engaging in such competitions.
The Cultural Gala festivities have continuously been sponsored by MTN Uganda for 8 years since they began.
