Officially opened on October 18, 2010 Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Mbale campus had since 2008 been a Regional Coordinating Centre for Students from Eastern Uganda taking courses e.g. Education and Agriculture at the University’s main campus at Nkozi in Mpigi District. On March 26, 2010, the National Council for Higher Education accredited Mbale Regional Centre as a campus of UMU.
Following this development, recruitment of new students started and by August that same year, the campus was ready to start with 160 students and 7 faculty staff available at the time. The main objective of the campus is to bring quality education with good morals and a fear of God closer to people in the Eastern Region of Uganda.
The campus is destined for Nyondo in Mbale District but will maintain an operation centre within Mbale Municipality (St. Austin or Gangama) to handle evening and weekend programmes. St. Austin is 1 km off the Mbale-Tororo road and opposite Mt. Elgon Hospital. Nyondo which is at the foot of Wanale rock, a range of Mt. Elgon, presents a beautiful and imposing mountain view with an excellent study environment. It is 1 km after Nabumali High School and 16 km from Mbale town.
The campus, in her fourth year of operation, has 342 registered students, 6 full-time and 13 part-time lecturers. The campus has an Advisory Board of 10 members chaired by Prof. John Okedi that guides the Director and Archbishop, His Grace Emmanuel Obbo, in matters pertaining to the welfare of the campus.
