Welcome to the African Center for Agro-Ecology and Livelihood Systems (ACALISE)


ACALISE is a Regional /African Center of Excellence in Agro-ecology and Livelihood Systems based at Uganda Martyrs University – Nkozi. It is one of the 4 World Bank Centers of Excellence in Uganda chosen through a very rigorous, highly competitive exercise that saw 116 project proposals submitted in East and Southern Africa (ESA) region but only 23 chosen to form the African Centers of Excellence II (ACE II) in ESA Countries. ACE I is a similar set of ACEs in West Africa. ACALISE is the only ACE II housed by a private University.



Africa in general and East Africa, in particular, is faced with problems of low production and productivity, little or no value addition to the few products but also lack of ethical values in management of a business. These overarching problems have of late been compounded by effects of climate change, all of which have made peoples’ livelihoods a dilemma....
